Fire In Mohawk ( tragic strikes the Keweenaw )

We only knew them as Mary Ann and Norm.  Mary Ann's husband Norm was blind and very seldom ever ventured from the house.  Mary Ann would always say hi but pretty much kept to  her self.  Donna would occasionally bring over a plate of cookies  or some freshly pick raspberries. But today tragic has struck our neighbors.

It was about 10 o'clock this morning when I notice smoke coming from the house.  I immediately dialed 911 and reported a house on fire on Seneca St.

This is a picture of the porch entrance to Mary Ann and Norms house.  This unfortunately
is the only way in and out of this house.  As I went in I crawled on my knees as it was easier to breath calling for Mary Ann.  I have never been in this house and every thing looked like a horror movie as every thing look distorted.  I probably never got more than 5 feet in the house before being over come by the smoke. Mary Ann never called out for help. By the time the fire department came it was to late.  Mary Ann and Norm never got out.  Update : Paul there only son stopped by to  shake my hand and said thanks for being a good neighbor. He recalled how his mom would call on the phone and said the Neighbor lady would always drop by with goodies.  They were very kind we are sorry they lost their mom and dad in such a tragic accident.

.There was one thing we did learn from this tragic event, though we have a fire hydrant right by our house, the hydrant is pretty much is useless. It only took the fire dept. about 20 min and all the water pressure was gone from the hydrant.  We learned that being on an end loop this is what happens. The fire Dept had to start hauling water from a near by lake.  Donna and I are going to check our smoke alarms often and have disused a plan to get out.
