Tragedy Strikes the Keweenaw

Agate Street Houghton.
The pictures of Houghton & surrounding area's is devastating.  It was a combination of flash flooding, mud slides, and generally no warning was ever given.  Homes were taken off foundations, basements were flooded, business closed down.  The media has pretty well covered it.  Most of these pictures of Houghton and surrounding areas  have been all over the news nation wide, and can be seen on MLive.    .

Thatcher Alan Markham 12 years old
The real tragedy is the death of a 12 year old boy.  I never met this young man personally.  The only contact I had with the family is when I took my boat in for repairs at Markham Marina on Canal Rd..
Alan was sleeping in his room down the basement of his home on Canal Rd.  Do to the flash flood the basement wall caved in and buried Alan in rock and muck.  His dad rushed down the basement, frantically dug him out and began CPR.  The only hospital was on the other side of the Portage Canal.  The neighbor took him in his boat across the canal to an ambulance standing by.  The hospital air flight took him down to Ann Arbor were he never was able to recover. A tragic ending to a young boys life.
