Snowmobiling to the Portage Bridge

The Portage bridge linking the two towns together, Houghton & Hancock. A beautiful winter scene.

I always wanted to snowmobile using the level 1 under the Portage bridge . This is set a side for use by just the snowmobiles.  Portage bridge has two levels.  At one time, level 1 was for trains and level 2 was for cars.  In 1970 all train tracks were pulled out of the Keweenaw so now level one is just used for snowmobiles and ATV.

I wanted to stop by the old copper smelter in Hancock to take a picture of the old locomotive sitting behind all the buildings.  The locomotive has  been sitting there for over 50 years and has always been a unique conversation piece. The train has been sold and will be moved in the spring. The locomotive and tender will be trucked to Owosso to the same company that owns the Polar express. The Steam Railroading Institute has plans to restore it and get it back to running condition.
